Nouveau Tudor: A Modern Monochrome Dinnerware Set Inspired by Tudor Architecture

A Unique Blend of Tradition and Technology

The Nouveau Tudor dinnerware set, designed by Khadine Khan-Parkinson, is a stunning collection that combines elements of Tudor architecture with modern design and manufacturing techniques. This monochrome set is not only visually striking but also showcases the seamless integration of traditional craftsmanship and new digital technologies.

The inspiration for the Nouveau Tudor design came from the decorative exterior architectural elements found in iconic buildings around the world. Khan-Parkinson carefully analyzed various decorative motifs and selected specific buildings that embodied each architectural style. For the Nouveau Tudor design, she drew inspiration from the Liberty of London building and developed a pattern based on its facade.

What sets the Nouveau Tudor dinnerware set apart is its bold and unique graphic pattern. Each piece of the service features a pattern that translates the traditional black and white timber-framed buildings into a modern monochrome design. When displayed together, the individual patterns combine to create a dramatic and dynamic display, reminiscent of the iconic Tudor architecture.

The dinnerware set includes a range of pieces, including dinner plates, salad plates, bread plates, bowls, saucers, and cups. The porcelain-handled flatware, a standout feature of the collection, was 3D printed to create a relief that mimics the timber frames embedded in plaster. The result is a stunning place setting that is both visually appealing and functional.

The realization of the Nouveau Tudor collection involved a combination of new digital desktop manufacturing technologies and traditional ceramic techniques. The porcelain-handled cutlery was slip cast in molds created from 3D printed prototypes, while the dinnerware patterns were digitally created and then screen printed by hand onto the white ware.

Designed with both period and contemporary interiors in mind, the Nouveau Tudor dinnerware set is a timeless classic. Its monochrome color scheme adds a touch of sophistication to any table setting, making it suitable for both formal and casual occasions. The porcelain-handled flatware is well balanced and comfortable to hold, ensuring a pleasurable dining experience.

The Nouveau Tudor project started in 2013 at Havering College in Romford and was completed in May 2015. It was first exhibited at New Designers in June 2014 in Islington, London. Throughout the design process, Khan-Parkinson faced various challenges, including merging the precision of digital production with the unpredictability of traditional methods and materials. However, she successfully struck a balance between the old and the new, resulting in a collection that showcases the best of both worlds.

The Nouveau Tudor dinnerware set is a testament to the possibilities that arise when traditional craftsmanship and new technologies are combined. By utilizing 3D printing and slip-casting, Khan-Parkinson has created a sustainable and small-batch production process for design-led home accessories. This innovative approach has the potential to revitalize cottage industries and provide new opportunities for designers.

The Nouveau Tudor dinnerware set has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2016. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contribute to quality of life improvements, and make the world a better place.

With its unique blend of tradition and technology, the Nouveau Tudor dinnerware set is a testament to Khadine Khan-Parkinson's creativity and innovation. It is a stunning example of how architecture can inspire and inform the design of everyday objects, elevating them to works of art.
